Decommissioned in 1820, the Whiteford Point Lighthouse is the sole remaining cast-iron lighthouse of its kind in Britain. It was used for bombing practice during the Second World War and is now a listed monument. It recently went on sale for £1, with the proviso that the buyer would have to agree to restoration costs of up to £100k (including a detailed survey to determine if there were any unexploded bombs at its base)! In 2009, two bomb disposal experts were exposed to mustard gas while diffusing an unexploded bomb on this beach!
